Today in class, we began to explore the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. I was blown away with the rich discussion each class had about human rights, where they see them happening and where they know these rights are threatened in the world. We also made connections to Chicago and the refugees they have seen in the city and how they know people/organizations are helping. I am excited to continue these discussions as we analyze how human rights are threatened in our novel, Esperanza Rising.
Here is a powerful video that we watched: www.youthforhumanrights.org/what-are-human-rights/ Next week, we will continue to read chapters from our the book and connect story structure and human rights to the events that unfold. Right now, there is a planned Mid Unit 1 Assessment for Friday. This will include identifying the main idea of a specific human right (page 18 in their workbook) and summarizing it, along with using root word knowledge to identify unknown words. We will work on these skills all of next week. If the quiz is needed to move, I will update families and students. In grammar, we will continue to review parts of speech. Homework next week will be comprehension questions on the different chapters we read and grammar practice as well.

In ELA this week, we will be reading further in Esperanza Rising. Students will also be introduced to the Declaration of Human Rights. We will be using this website:
https://www.youthforhumanrights.org/ For grammar, we are briefly reviewing parts of speech. Their notes on this will be glued in their Reading/Writing spiral notebook. Students will have various activities/assignments for the next two weeks before an assessment. Last week, I introduced students to their monthly Independent Reading Assessment. There is one due each month on the last school day of the month. This month's is due September 29th. I will review these with families at our Curriculum Night. Students will have homework in the form of comprehension questions and grammar. We will be starting our first unit next week. Students will receive the novel and workbook. Homework will also begin next week- which could include reading pages from the novel, answering comprehension questions or finishing work we started in class. Please check student agendas for these assignments.
Here is a family letter introducing our first Module, Stories of Human Rights. This year, we will be using the EL Curriculum in class. We will have 4 Modules this year, each module will be made up of 2-3 units. More information will be given out about the topics/themes at Curriculum Night.
